Best Places To Live During Business School

Best Places To Live During Business School image via universumglobal.com If you are planning on attending business school this fall, it might be time to start looking into places to live. You don’t want just any place, you want the best space possible for you! What does that really mean? Here are some location ideas that can give you a head start on finding the perfect place for you. The Perfect View Picture this: you are working tirelessly on some econ homework and getting ready for a big presentation in your business class. You are feeling the pressure. You open the blinds to your room and stare out into the most breath-taking sunset view that you ever did see. You stare at it for a moment, taking in how gorgeous nature is, and then get back to work, basking in the view that is yours. This isn’t for everyone, but most people function better when they have a view that is aesthetically pleasing. This view doesn’t have to be of nature either. You might prefer a place that has a view of the city, the place where you dream to work after finishing up school. Motivation like this can be essential when you are having one of those days where you just want to curl up in bed and never have to get up again. The Perfect Vibe Where you live is going to play a big part in how much work you get done. If you are in a place where everything is fast paced and loud and the neighbors party too much for their own good, chances are you aren’t going to get the focus you need. And if you are in a place that is so silent that you are starting to go crazy, well, that isn’t good either. What you need is a good balance between the two, a place that is close enough to fun things so you can let off some steam, but also in its own little nook so you can get away when you need to and bust out some late night research. If you love the hustle and bustle of the city, try and get a place close to a quaint coffee shop or that is in walking distance to a library or study center. This way, you still have your escape, but can enjoy where you live. The Perfect Location We all know that networking is everything, especially in the business world, so when you are choosing where to live around your school, pick a place where a lot of professionals also live, or at least pass through. You never know what kind of conversation you might strike up in your local Starbucks, and never know when an opportunity will hit you. The better you locate yourself, the better chances you have with this! It’s also good to be in a place where you can witness professionals in your field firsthand. This should motivate you to keep going, to get to where they are at some point in your life. If you haven’t yet picked a school and are still trying to decide where to apply, why not look into ones, like San Jose State, that are close to hot spot locations, like Silicon Valley? You are going to end up in an area like this eventually for work, so if you can have a school that is already centered there, you’ll be golden. The Perfect People The people who you associate with are either going to make you or break you. If you are striving for success, you want to live around people who are also trying to make it, and will want the best for you. This could mean living around some friends that you know are hard workers, or look for areas that contain recent grads, so you can see where you will be in a few short months. Partying is fun every once in a while, but you don’t want to be living around people who will distract you, or who will post Facebook photos of you that will hurt your chances of getting hired. If you live around people with a professional vibe, you too will embody it. The Perfect Distance You want to find a place that has a decent commute between school, work and fun activities. While this can be a bit trickier to find, it will be worth the effort of finding. This way, if you don’t have a car, you can walk or bike where you need to go without breaking too much of a sweat. Don’t want to look unprofessional now, do we? This way you can still get some exercise in to be of sound mind and body, and won’t have a hard time getting to where you need to go, thus always being on time and always looking like the professional you are. When it comes to where you are living, there are a lot of things you should be looking for. It’s not just a place, it’s the space that can help you become all that you are meant to be and more. Good luck out there! Learn more about Kaplan’s test prep options and start building the confidence you need for Test Day.

8 Job Environments To Consider Before Applying For Jobs

8 Job Environments To Consider Before Applying For Jobs Image via (hingtu.com) Some people just like knowing that they have an assigned desk to come work in. Getting up from your chair for a water break may also provide the perfect excuse to socialize with your coworkers. The Outdoors Photographers, environmental scientists, and athletes often need some fresh air and natural ambiance. The pictures you see posted on National Geographic didn’t happen because somebody stayed inside. People risk their lives for the best angle or the most vibrant picture. Image via (MBC Times) Environmentalists and scientists are constantly observing nature’s phenomenons. Special praise goes out to the ones who study dangerous plants, animals, and natural disasters. You’re doing the world a favor by pursuing a career and job environment that not many could handle. Athletes endure extreme weather. Field players will play in the rain or cold weather and are at a higher risk of injury. The long practices and exercises they prepare for games with are great resistance builders, but I can’t imagine what it’s like running after a soccer ball in negative degree weather! Dedicated fans deserve a round of applause, too. The Bedroom I resonate highly with not wanting to leave the house, ever. Journalists, writers, and editors can do their job from a computer anywhere. If you are pursuing an online career, the chances of working from home are pretty high. Image via (Pinterest) Working from your bedroom means not having to change out of your pajamas, not having to leave your pet alone for hours, and not having to waste a good outfit for the same people you see every day. “But wouldn’t you just procrastinate?” I see how that can be a concern, but this job environment doesn’t work for everyone. Obviously, you could just go back to bed, maybe watch TV, or literally get up and do anything else. If you’re like me, however, you’ll be able to sit down and zip through your work in one sitting because you can concentrate long enough to get your work done. The  Workroom If collaboration and teamwork is your ideal job environment, the workroom is the best place for you. Sitting at a table where anyone else can join in and sit quietly or spark a conversation on a project can really boost teamwork and positive coworker relations. Image via (Google) Being able to engage in transparent and open communication is also a social skill booster. The better you are at talking to your team members about a certain problem or concern, the more practice you will have when it comes to tackling small conversation with strangers. The Studio Creative minds that work without fear will be found here. Ranging from musicians to painters to photographers, artists of all sorts will be in the studio putting out their best work. Image via (Twitter) Personally, I admire people that can create something out of nothing. I’ve seen people work in photo studios and recording studios. You can physically feel the originality and imagination that people exude to capture angles and create bangers. The Coffee Shop Writers and authors will most likely excel in a coffee shop. Strangers walking in for some body fuel can inspire writers to create a character they weren’t sure how to develop or even inspire them to a create a new character. Image via (Medium.com) If you’re also a person that likes to work on crunch time, not bringing your laptop charger may help. Relying on a full battery will help you focus on your work and gives you a break to look forward to and recharge. The fact that you have to travel very little for some coffee is nice, too. The Hospital Doctors and nurses deserve a special credit for being society’s healers. The hospital is a tough work environment that takes many years of development, knowledge, and hands-on practice to prepare for. Image via (Pinterest) It is the work environment that only the empathetic and strong can endure. Sleepless nights due to long shifts and surgeries, exposure to illness, and stressful cases can take a toll on a person’s heart and well-being. These are just a few of the reasons that the medical field is understaffed. On The Go The mobile age is only getting better. Being able to work from literally anywhere is something very appealing to younger generations. We the people who grew up with cellphones and laptops are taking advantage of the accessibility that mobile devices provide to get work done. Image via (Stocksy) Whatever you decide to do, make sure that you can also see yourself working in that job environment. Many times, all it takes is an internship in that field to help you decide where you fit best.

8 Things I learned from teaching in Tokyo

8 Things I learned from teaching in Tokyo I spent five years living in Tokyo, starting out as an English teacher in a language school. Teaching in Tokyo left me with thousands of memories and many lessons learned. Here are some of them: Food is better when shared. Having previously taught in China, I was used to the “shared” style of eating where several large dishes are ordered for the table, and everyone takes a few bites of each. I missed this once I moved back to North America! It’s so much nicer to be able to try a little of everything, and that style of eating lets you have your fill without stuffing yourself. Anything can be gift-wrapped. Because gift-giving is so important in Japan, every store will provide gift wrapping if requested. One of my first days in Japan, I was checking out in the supermarket when I saw a woman ask to have a bunch of bananas gift-wrapped. The employee cheerfully obliged as if it were nothing out of the ordinary. Karaoke is the ultimate stress reliever. Most group nights out end with a rousing session of karaoke that can go until the early hours of the morning. (Keep in mind that Japanese-style karaoke, as with other countries in East Asia, is performed in private booths, not onstage in front of a bar full of strangers.) Nothing got my stress out more than belting out my favorite classic hits in a room full of friends. Honesty rules. Theft is extraordinarily rare in Japan (the country has one of the lowest reported crime rates in the world). Even accidentally cheating someone out of a few yen is unthinkable for most people. When I first arrived in Japan, a group of fellow teachers left a bit of change on our table at a restaurant (the equivalent of about 30 cents in US dollars). Our waiter chased us down the street to return it to us, and wouldn’t accept it when we tried to tell him he could keep it. Kindness rules, too. Tokyo is a confusing place, and I got lost about once a week on average. I had numerous experiences where complete strangers would go 20 minutes out of their way just to take me where I was trying to go. I always felt terribly guilty, but their kindness really was overwhelming. Heated toilet seats will change your life in winter. The rest of the world needs more of these. A little effort goes a long way. When I first arrived in Japan, I was frequently complimented on my Japanese (which was, frankly, not great). However, the people I met were so appreciative whenever foreigners made an effort to learn the language--especially the writing system!--and were very encouraging as I struggled through sentences. Tokyo will never stop surprising you. Sure, some things were tiring: the rush hour trains, the crowds, the maze-like streets. But Tokyo has a magic quality about it that simply needs to be experienced in person. I loved having visitors from home, because seeing their faces as they discovered the city for the first time always brought me back to my arrival in Japan years ago, and made me fall in love with it all over again. The Barriers to Access in Online Tutoring

The Barriers to Access in Online TutoringWith all the hoopla over online tutoring, there is so much talk about the challenges that students face in accessing traditional schools and other educational institutions. There is one real hurdle, however, that is quickly becoming apparent, which is the lack of access to an expert tutor in this realm. The obstacle in finding one may be a simple one, but the problem in finding a solution to it has been faced by many students throughout the years.Access to a well-connected tutor or teacher is indeed important and must be given the best chance possible. Getting online resources is simply not going to cut it, because access is difficult for some students. Fortunately, it can be addressed, and the best way to do that is to know the solutions to the barriers to entry for online tutoring services. In order to assess the barriers to entry for online tutoring services, one must first get to the very root of the problem. The most common of these is sim ply being unable to afford to get good tutors. Another obstacle is simply that the resources available are simply not good enough for students in many cases. This is a really big problem and one that is getting worse by the day.A person who is able to afford a good tutor, but can't afford to pay a tutor are going to have a very difficult time obtaining a solid education. Furthermore, if the student is just a year away from graduation, finding the time to travel to different tutoring locations is nearly impossible. This is a huge problem and one that need to be addressed. If the problem is access to an online tutor, then the remedy is easy, but the problem is exactly the same as any other hurdle with online tutoring. Fortunately, this is becoming easier. The best of the online services are actually setting up locations where they can actually tutor students and are often using this as a way to help students get started in their education without having to pay a fee. As a result, the b arrier to access is no longer the ability to get the teacher, but rather the accessibility of the teacher.Another way to assess the barriers to entry for online tutoring services is to understand what are the current attitudes towards the use of online resources. A large portion of the people out there do realize the value of online tutoring and have begun to use the Internet as a place to search for resources that are based on standardized testing, and college admissions.Access to online tutoring services has dramatically increased, and with it, the potential for good and great online resources has also increased as well. This is good news for students who want to obtain good grades and career success.

This means that everyone can judge their level fairly a nd then put it onto their CV and have it understood by almost anyone who reads it.Let’s have a look at three of the biggest English exams. You might have heard of them...We’re talking about the TOEFL, TOEIC, and the GMAT!Everyone should take a page out of Shakespeare's book! (Source: Wikimedia Commons)Let’s have a look at the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) first!TOEFLThe TOEFL is obviously for non-native speakers of English and is a varied test of your reading and writing skills, listening skills, and your spoken English. It’s particularly useful for those at academic institutions like university or those looking to study in an English-speaking country. It was created in 1964 by Princeton University’s Educational Testing Service (ETS).There aren't many free English tests and the TOEFL is no different. Unfortunately, like almost every other English exam, you'll have to pay for it.Once you have your TOEFL, it’s valid for two years. However, before you open yo ur wallet and pay to sit the exam, you should probably take a look at what it is, what it includes, and what it's good for.The TOEFL is a multiple-choice exam with two versions (the offline computer version has been replaced by the online version):The PBT paper version of the exam which is scored out of 677 points. And the iBT internet version of the exam which is scored out of 120 points. Both exams are broken into four parts which include: listening (between 1 hour and 1 hour 30 minutes), reading  (1 hour), writing (20 minutes), and speaking (20 minutes using a microphone).TOEICThe TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is also run by the “ETS” and has been around since 1979 and in many ways is very similar to the TOEFL.The main and most important difference is that this exam focuses on international communication and is geared towards business English rather than everyday English like the TOEFL.The TOEIC is accepted in 150 different countries by thousands and t housands of businesses. In fact, it was the Japanese government that gave Princeton the idea! The exam tests listening and reading over the course of two hours. The results are on a scale of 990 with different colours indicating the grade boundaries. There’s also a speaking and writing paper you can choose to take that lasts 1 hour 20 minutes.See the best English lessons for you.GMATFinally, the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) takes another step towards business and management, in particular. The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) in the US first offered the GMAT in 1953.The exam is indispensable for those wanting to complete an MBA in an English-speaking university. Some multinational businesses and top-rated universities require it as part of their recruitment or admissions procedure. The GMAT lasts 4 hours and tests every linguistic skill imaginable before scoring you out of 800 points. It also includes maths and logic questions.Your score is calculated to includ e results from every time you’ve taken the GMAT within the last 5 years too.In addition to the three giants of English-language examinations, there are also plenty of English-language certificates you can get to prove your abilities.ETS also includes lighter versions of the TOEFL and the TOEIC for those whose English level doesn’t need to be as high. The TOEIC Bridge, for example, is designed for secondary-school students. There’s also the TOEFL Junior for even younger candidates.E-learning might very well be the future of learning English. (Source: stocksnap)Cambridge English Language AssessmentThe University of Cambridge in the UK also provides examinations which are more common for non-native speakers across Europe. The KET (Key English Test) is equivalent to the CEFR A2, the PET (Preliminary English Test) and the FCE (First Certificate in English) correspond to B1 and B2 respectively. Finally, they also offer the CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) for C1 and the CPE (Cert ificate of Proficiency in English) accrediting a C2 level of English. If you’re not going to choose to do Cambridge exam, you could opt for the BULATS (Business Language Testing Service). You can also verify your level in French, German, and Spanish at the same time in doing so.The British Council also offer the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) which is chosen by 3 million candidates every year! A number of English-speaking countries use this when it comes to immigration. Your result is given to you as one of the CEFR levels.Don’t forget you can also opt for national exams. However, these aren’t often recognised outside of the country issuing them which can cause problems if you want to live, study, or work anywhere else in the world. If you’re not planning on moving any time soon, though, you could always opt for one of these as they’re usually cheaper than the internationally-recognised exams we were talking about earlier.English Teaching Certification sIf you want to give private tutorials in English, you don’t technically need any qualifications. However, the qualifications you have can help you find customers who trust you and will be happy to hand over their hard-earned money for quality English tutorials. If you don’t, it might be difficult to find customers even if you are a master of irregular verbs, English grammar, and have a fantastic vocabulary!Lessons at an English-speaking university are a great idea. In fact, language immersion is the best school there is! (Source: Unsplash)To make your profile more appealing, one or two qualifications can go a long way. They reassure customers and make them more likely to choose you if they haven't already met you.If you don’t have any, you might need to highlight some other qualities. For example, if you’re a native speaker, it would be very foolish not to mention it.Don’t forget to say whether or not you’ve spent a number of years, living, studying, or working in one of the many countries that make up the Commonwealth or if your parents are native-English speakers.Being perfectly bilingual can be a huge benefit. For that, you’ll need immersion! A language exchange or a language stay mightn’t be enough...If you want to teach English in a school, you usually need at least a post-graduate qualification.A Guide to the GMAT test and Finding a GMAT TutorWith everything you read above, have you decided you want to focus on business management and do the GMAT?  You’re going to need to know a few techniques to help you pass the English part of the GMAT.You have to be aware of your strengths and weaknesses. This isn’t the kind of exam you can just show up to even if your English is really good.  For one, you need to make sure you’re spending no longer than 2 minutes on every question! We recommend reading the options before reading the question. This means you can start eliminating impossible answers as soon as you read the question.Make sure you al ways use a piece of scrap paper to work on, too.A good GMAT score basically means you speak English like a native would. (Source: Visual Hunt)You should also be preparing for the exam with intensive revision sessions and reading English-language media.  Hiring a private tutor is a great idea when you’re preparing for the GMAT.How do you choose which exam to do? Start by thinking about your objectives and what you’re going to use English for.  The GMAT won’t be of any interest to bookworms and Anglophiles, the TOEIC isn’t great if you want to go to university, and the KET or PET aren’t for bilinguals...There's no perfect English exam. You need to think about the reasons why you're taking an English exam, what type of student you are, and how the exam can help you in the future. If you've considered all that and still want to sit the GMAT, we've put together some advice on the best ways to prepare for it!You can find a private tutor to help you learn english online or in pers on by visiting  Superprof. 4 Steps to Take Today to Prepare for B-School

4 Steps to Take Today to Prepare for B-School Applying to business school can be a competitive process. If youre a college senior who wishes to enroll in business school this fall, at this point in the admissions process you have either submitted your applications during Round 1 or Round 2, or you are preparing your applications for Round 3 or Round 4 in March and April. For those of you who have completed your submissions, congratulations! All you have to do at the moment is wait for your schools decisions to arrive before you plan your next steps. For college seniors who are still working on MBA applications, there are a few steps you can take today to prepare for b-school, such as taking the GMAT or GRE and speaking with current MBAs and alumni. B-school step 1: take the GMAT or the GRE Most MBA programs require students to submit a GMAT or GRE score with their application. Check which exam your short-listed schools prefer, and if you have not done so already, take that exam. If either is accepted, sit for the exam you perform better on. Although you dont have much time, you shouldnt take either test without first preparing for it. Take a practice GRE and a practice GMAT, and see which one you feel more comfortable with. Then, register for your exam, create a study plan, and put in the work so that you can perform your best. [RELATED: Should I take the GMAT or GRE?] B-school step 2: visit your schools Many MBA programs offer similar core curriculums, but not all schools are the same. Each school you apply to wants to know why you are choosing them and why they should choose you. Learning about your schools in person will help you answer these questions when asked on your application and during your interview. Schedule a tour with the admissions office so that you can sample a class, meet professors, and speak with admissions officers. Being on campus in your potential MBA environment will help inform why you are applying to that particular program. [RELATED: 4 Ways to Prepare For Business School During Your Last Undergrad Semester] B-school step 3: speak with current MBAs and alumni Find other people who have already gone through the business school application process and connect with them. Luckily, you will already be meeting some of these people when you take your school tours. You can also connect with alumni from your current college or university who have gone on to attend business school after graduation. Ask them how the MBA experience was for them. Listen to their stories, and consider how you can apply their advice to your experience. Learn from their mistakes and triumphs so that you can get ahead of the game.
